Pedagogy Program

Exclusively for qualified advanced-level dancers who train at Greater Washington Dance Center.

The Greater Washington Dance Center Pedagogy Program is a specialized teacher-training program designed exclusively for advanced-level dancers who train at GWDC. One of the few programs of its kind offered as part of a comprehensive pre-professional dance education, Pedagogy provides our dancers with something especially valuable: the opportunity to become not only accomplished dancers, but knowledgeable and capable teachers.

As an important part of their progression at GWDC, participants deepen their understanding of dance education while developing the skills needed to work effectively with young children. Through classroom study, observation, and hands-on assisting, dancers learn how children develop and learn movement, how to communicate technical concepts in age-appropriate ways, and how to teach the curriculum used in GWDC’s early childhood and foundational ballet classes.

The program includes the study of child development, anatomy and kinesiology, lesson planning, classroom management, movement progression, teaching methodology, and the responsibilities involved in creating a caring, nurturing, and professional learning environment. Dancers also gain practical experience by observing and assisting in GWDC classes, allowing them to apply what they are learning under the guidance of experienced teachers.

Pedagogy also gives advanced dancers a new perspective on their own training. By studying why skills are introduced in a particular sequence, what physical and developmental prerequisites must come first, and how strong foundational technique is built over time, participants develop a deeper understanding of ballet technique and the Greater Washington Dance Center curriculum.

Because the program builds upon years of technical training within GWDC, admission is limited to qualified Greater Washington Dance Center dancers. Participants are expected to have reached a specific level of dance proficiency, demonstrate maturity and responsibility, understand our teaching philosophy, and be familiar with the progression of our curriculum before entering the program. The Pedagogy Program is not available to students outside of GWDC.

Training That Extends Beyond the Studio

One of the greatest benefits of completing the Pedagogy Program is that dancers leave GWDC with a valuable professional skill. Graduates are prepared to pursue teaching opportunities at dance schools and programs beyond Greater Washington Dance Center, providing them with the potential for meaningful employment throughout college and well into the future.

For dancers who have devoted years to their training, teaching offers an opportunity to turn that knowledge and experience into a profession. Whether teaching becomes a college job, a complementary career, or a lifelong vocation in dance education, the skills developed through the GWDC Pedagogy Program can continue serving our dancers long after their own student years have ended.

Our goal is not simply to teach dancers how to lead a ballet class. It is to develop knowledgeable, thoughtful and confident educators who understand both the art and the responsibility of teaching—and who are prepared to pass their knowledge on to the next generation of dancers.
